Long before Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, in the 14th century Portugal witnessed the real love story of Pedro and Inês.

The lover’s Path leads us to Coimbra, Montemor - o - Velho and Alcobaça. The lovers were Pedro, King of Portugal, and Inês de Castro, crowned queen after her death. As a prince who was already married, Pedro fell madly in love with Galician Inês, his wife's maid. They lived the most intense passion in Portugal’s history and perhaps of the world. From this romance three children were born and it ended only when Pedro's father, King Afonso IV, ordered Inês's execution.
After becoming King D Pedro, he orders Inês de Castro to be crowned Queen of Portugal.
