Start the day with a guided visit to Queluz National Palace and its gardens. Built by King Peter III, husband of Queen Mary I, and used as a royal residence, this palace is one of the best examples of Portuguese architecture from the late 18th century. It was the idyllic countryside spot, where an Hunting Lodge stood. The palace is dominated by the rocaille architecture and decoration and has an important collection of decorative arts - Portuguese furniture, paintings, rugs, porcelain and tiles. Also beautiful gardens of geometric design surrounding the palace, with lakes and sculptures, even a Water Canal furnished with colorful tiles.

In the afternoon, visit the National Palace of Mafra started in 1717 by King John V of Portugal. A grand monument of Baroque style that benefited from the wealth coming from Brazil. A monastery for 330 monks, a basilica, a summer palace with 666 rooms, and a rocaille library - the largest and most important library in Portugal with 83m long, with 40 000 volumes and books from the 16th century. José Saramago (Nobel Prize for Literature) was here inspired to his best known novel Baltasar and Blimunda.
