If you want to take a different moment, we are proposing a conventual pastry tasting inside this fantastic monument that we promise will be a unique experience, because “wherever exists a Monastery, or a convent, exists the tradition of convent pastry and liqueurs. The conventual sweets are a unique heritage and great treasure, elevated in 2004 as a cultural heritage.
Founded in 1153, by the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, and blessed by Bernardo de Claraval, the Monastery of Alcobaça is one of the best-preserved Cistercian monuments of Europe, with the one of the most monumental church of the Order. Considered as a main house of the Cistercian Order in Portugal, it was also the spiritual, artistic and cultural center of the Cistercian group in Portugal. The church was built by the first Portuguese gothic, and is the home of the most beautiful tomb sculptures ever made, the place where the two lovers D. Pedro e D. Inês de Castro, lie until the end of times. The monument is designated as a World Heritage Site and a National Wonder of Portugal. According to the English traveler William Beckford, the Monastery was the biggest temple of Gluttony in Europe in the century XVII.
